Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) focuses on improving emotions and learning how to manage them. This is a form of therapy in which negative thinking patterns are analyzed. Solutions are then devised as a means of breaking those patterns allowing for positive behavioral change over time.
At Steps For Change, we understand the importance of receiving high-quality treatment and therapies. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that teaches therapeutic skills in four key areas. The first is mindfulness which helps individuals be present in the moment. The second is distress tolerance which focuses on increasing a person’s tolerance of negative emotions, rather than trying to escape them. The third is emotion regulation which teaches strategies to manage and change intense emotions that are causing problems in a person’s life.
The last key area is interpersonal effectiveness which consists of techniques that allow a person to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self-respect, and strengthens relationships.
DBT is carried out during individual or family therapy sessions. Client’s and their families (if applicable) are taught specific skills during individual or family therapy sessions and then practice the skills in between therapy sessions. In total, there are 16 modules that are covered.
It can be difficult to process things as they're happening and for that to lead to misunderstandings and sudden emotional outbursts. DBT teaches clients to be mindful so that they can properly process the situations that they're encountering which in turn allows for more controlled responses to stimuli.
One of the issues that bring clients to DBT is an inability to communicate effectively. This can lead to confrontations which can lead to severed relationships. DBT teaches effective communication skills, helping clients to maintain their relationships.
Another big benefit of DBT is that it teaches strategies to help regulate emotions by providing clients with new skills to manage painful emotions.
Destructive patterns can be difficult for individuals to identify for themselves. If only there were a way to identify these patterns, so they could be changed. This is where DBT comes in. DBT helps clients identify destructive patterns, allowing them to understand these patterns and change them.
DBT is a suitable therapy for a variety of issues; however, those who most commonly benefit from it include the following.
DBT was created to assist those affected by borderline personality disorder or BPD. This is a disorder characterized by emotional dysregulation. It generally entails rocky relationships and can also include extreme negative thoughts and self-harm.
DBT benefits those with BPD by helping them to be mindful of their emotional stressors. In helping them to be mindful, they can respond more favorably. If you have BPD, this is generally the best type of therapy to make the most positive change.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves an individual experiencing symptoms after a traumatic event such as a car accident or physical/sexual assault.
Just like those with BPD, people who have PTSD can also benefit greatly from DBT. It can help them manage their emotions and improve relationships.
DBT can be a suitable therapy for individuals who struggle with mood swings and anger issues. It can teach them ways to identify the causes of their mood swings and manage them effectively.
It can also teach individuals how to cope with anger issues if they are constantly on edge or get angry over small inconveniences.
If you or a loved one is participating in self-harm (e.g., cutting themselves, hitting themselves etc.), DBT can be very effective in teaching individuals to redirect negative emotions, allowing them to cope with their thoughts in healthy and productive ways.
