Steps For Change – Adult Residential (SFC-AR) is a non-secure 7 bed community based residential facility in Minneapolis, Minnesota that provides treatment to justice involved adult males who have engaged in illegal sexual behaviors who are in need of a higher level of treatment intensity.

Who We Treat

SFC-AR’s target population includes:

  • Level 3’s/Required to register as a predatory offender
  • Individuals with significant antisocial behavior patterns and criminal histories
  • Deviant sexual interests
  • Exhibiting sexually compulsive behaviors
  • Adults who committed the offense as a juvenile
  • Neurodiverse
  • Have mild cognitive impairments

Exclusionary Criteria

  • Actively suicidal and in need of psychiatric care
  • Actively psychotic and in need of psychiatric stabilization first
  • Actively abusing substances and need substance use treatment first
  • Serious flight risk
  • Recent history of absconding from residential placement(s), case by case basis
  • A level of sexual compulsivity/sexual aggression or physical aggression towards staff, residents, or others in the community that creates an immediate risk
  • Individuals requiring service animals for daily functioning

  • Primary Group:
  • This group is led by a clinician. Residents will present their sex- offense-specific treatment assignments and receive feedback from peers and therapists. If time allows, therapists will teach relevant psychoeducational content to the group. If a resident is being advanced to the next phase of treatment group will begin by discussing their achievements, struggles, and how their fellow residents can support them as they enter the next phase of treatment.
  • Psychoeducational/Skills Group:
  • Topics will rotate every 1-2 weeks and will include topics such as healthy & abusive relationships, intimacy, sex education, consent, healthy internet use, anger management, etc. This group is meant to build off of and enhance the assignment work residents are already completing as part of their treatment. Skills Group: Topics will rotate weekly and will include: emotion regulation, distress tolerance, social skills, independent living skills (e.g., money management, basic cooking, etc.); how to make a healthy living plan (e.g., self-soothing, exercise, meditation, self-care, support people); building self-esteem, etc.
  • Processing Group:
  • The purpose of this group is to address residents' problematic behaviors within the therapeutic community and/or the community at large, as well as to process and address interpersonal stressors and trauma.
  • Aftercare Group:
  • Residents who complete SFC-AR primary sex-specific treatment will also attend an aftercare group once per week. The aftercare group will focus on residents following their self-regulation plan, maintaining stability in the community, and demonstrating fidelity to their GLM-based treatment plans (e.g., engagement in pro-social activities, maintaining relationships with non-delinquent peers, following community safety plans, etc.).
