Anxiety refers to how your body naturally deals with stress. More often than not, it involves feeling a sort of uncertainty or fear about what might happen in the near future. GAD is often characterized by excessive worrying over factors outside of your control.
Everyone experiences anxiety at any point in their life. For example, individuals tend to have anxiety over job interviews, giving presentations in front of peers, going on dates, and more.
During these instances, your brain may attempt to come up with possible ways in which the situation could turn out poorly. In turn, this could make you apprehensive about pursuing it.
However, anxiety can also be a mental health disorder. This occurs when you feel anxious for a period of months, your anxiety begins interfering with your life, or your waves of anxiety are notably extreme.
There are several types of anxiety that individuals can suffer from. Depending on the person, different types affect people differently.
Social anxiety involves feeling apprehensive or fearful about social situations. This could involve attending a new school or going to a workplace for the first time. An individual could also experience social anxiety during something as simple as having a conversation with peers. In extreme scenarios, social anxiety may deter you from visiting public places entirely. It’s not uncommon for those who have social anxiety to spend much of their time within their own home.
Panic disorder is a form of anxiety that is characterized by sudden panic attacks. These typically have both mental and physical symptoms, including dizziness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of overwhelming fear. You may also begin to feel dissociated from your surroundings.
Individuals with separation anxiety begin to feel overly anxious when they are physically distant from someone important to them. Although this typically occurs in children, it is not uncommon in adults. To elaborate, an adult may develop severe separation anxiety over a sibling who has moved to a different country. They may frequently worry that something bad is going to happen to them or that they will be harmed.
People with OCD experience recurring, unwanted ideas or thoughts that drive them to do something repetitively (compulsions). Individuals' daily activities and social interactions can be significantly affected by repetitive behaviors such as checking on things, cleaning, or hand washing.
The symptoms of anxiety will vary from person to person. In general, however, you may experience some or all of the following:
These symptoms may or may not occur during a situation that causes you to feel anxious. For example, you may experience an overall feeling of apprehension before giving a speech in front of your classmates.
After the speech has concluded, however, you may then experience some of the above symptoms as the anxiety begins to set in.
In some cases, individuals who have anxiety may experience an anxiety attack. These are more or less the same feelings you experience while feeling anxious but at a greater magnitude.
Although these are similar to panic attacks, they are not identical. Individuals who are experiencing anxiety attacks should attempt to relocate somewhere quiet that instills a feeling of safety.
Many people choose to get into their own vehicle when possible, for example. Keep in mind, however, that you should choose a different location if you begin to feel claustrophobic.
Anxiety can cause a handful of complications. Fortunately, there are plenty of different treatment options available. In fact, many of these are natural.
In the simplest form, individuals may be able to combat their anxiety through a combination of meditating and getting enough sleep. Exercising and improving overall diet can also play a significant role when it comes to how people manage their anxiety.
It may also be in a person’s best interest to avoid both alcohol and caffeine.
However, lifestyle changes aren’t always enough to keep anxiety in check. In scenarios like these, it’s recommended that you get in touch with a mental health professional.
These individuals have all of the required knowledge and resources to educate you on how to control the negative feelings you experience. Over time, you may even find that you no longer experience complications related to anxiety at all.
